Aevitas Consultancy · Honest answers
Six myths, answered straight.
Promoters hear a lot about going public — from well-meaning friends, confident intermediaries, and the internet. Here are the six we correct most often, answered the way we answer them on a clarity call.
"Only big companies can go public."
Not in India today. The SME platforms — NSE Emerge and BSE SME — were built precisely so growing companies could list, with size limits and requirements to match. The honest question is never "are we big enough?" but "are we ready enough?"
"An IPO means instant money to spend."
The money raised is spoken for before it arrives: stated purposes in the offer document, regulator and investor scrutiny, and promoters locked in alongside. Listing hands you capital with discipline attached — treat the discipline as the feature, not the catch.
"We can decide now and list next quarter."
The paperwork is the shortest part of the journey. Readiness — governance, accounts, processes, documentation — reliably takes longer than first-time promoters expect, and rushing it shows. The companies that list well prepare early, on their own timeline.
"Once we're listed, the hard part is over."
Listing changes the pressure rather than removing it: regular reporting, timely disclosures, public scrutiny, permanent discipline. It is a genuine upgrade for a company that is built for it — and a burden for one that is not. Readiness decides which you experience.
"The merchant banker does everything."
The merchant banker leads the offer, and many roles on this road are reserved for licensed professionals by regulation. But no one can substitute for a prepared company: the numbers, records and governance must exist before any banker can present them. We make sure you arrive at them ready.
"Listing guarantees a higher valuation."
No one can guarantee what the market will pay — and anyone who does should be avoided. What listing genuinely offers is visibility, credibility and a public price for your shares; what the price becomes is the market's decision, made daily.
